After reading what Michelle wrote regarding her experience with “nice racism” and her little girl I felt there was another aspect. We have a beautiful biological girl that most cannot resist commenting about. However, more often than not they fail to even mention the little boy I am holding. I feel like adopted boys and girls are treated differently. I thought about this just last week while Char and I were running around L-A searching for a home. A lady walked into the real estate office and cooed over Ava but then had no idea how to handle commenting on Binh, both which were on the floor in the same vicinity. I wonder, what is going through their mind? Is it a look of confusion, judgement, something else. Some things I think I know about the look and the thought process behind the eyes: it is race related and ignorance related. I feel this way because I have the context of a beautiful, smart, blond haired, blue eyed biological girl.
I cant allow such external ignorant reactions to change my actions. It is so important to get educated and especially comfortable with these situations. My son deserves better than this.
Sorry to use a picture from a previous post but hey, I think it illustrates my point. How does that little face not inspire a reaction.
I have finally received my last grade and ready to move back to real work. I have not been as uncomfortable in New England as Char has. It will be interesting to see how the children like the warmer weather. We are excited to get into our new home and make it our own. Char has some pictures of the new place on her side. Now that all the work is done I should have more time post.
This will probably be the last “Binh only” YoutubeTuesday. In the beginning it was important to catch family up with who he is. We have definitely not forgotten about Ava.
We are excited that we got an appt. with Dr. Laurie Miller who specializes in international adoptions. Not that Binh is such a handful or anything but it will be very interesting to get such an experienced point of view. Binh is developing very fast. In the beginning we felt that he may not progress at the same learning pace that Ava has, but that is simply not the case. He picks up on things very quickly. His motor skills are further along that Ava’s were at her age. He is already standing which is this week’s YoutubeTuesday video.
We feel like Binh is already providing hints to his ultimate profession. We have a drawer under the coffee table with toys and such. A while back we saw that 5 in 1 classic video game box at Target. Yea, you know the one… most of you my age wanted it whether you to admit it or not, that Mrs. Packman/Galaga, Pole Position /etc. I’ll bet at least one of you have one. Anyway, Binh managed to get it out of the drawer and Ava wanted to “dribe the Cah.” That’s right, she is dropping her Rs like a typical New Englander. The pic below is Binh’s first experience with Mrs. Packman and he actually has some points! He’s a gamer…
